Jeff Kloppenburg made the 4 1/2 hour trip to Salt Lake City May 24th to take part in the Sugarhouse Criterium for a second time. Placing 27th out of a large Category 3/4 field of 36 fit racers was a good achievement for Kloppenburg’s early-season fitness, especially since the average speed was 26.3 mph.

Hosted in beautiful Sugar House Park, the Sugar House Criterium is an annual race that attracts large numbers of bicycle racers. The course follows a one-way park road with twists and turns and some appreciable climbing every lap and a total of 1272 ft. of climbing.

The 1.4 mile circuit is a spectator’s dream since the park features lush lawns, flower gardens, and a man-made lake complete with ducks and swans. They were even having a Utah Iris Society Iris competition in a community building situated in the same parking lot as the park.
