Old Pass Road Project

Background
The Old Teton Pass Road of Teton County, Wyoming is a historic and recreational resource, running from the end of Trail Creek Road to the top of the 8431 foot Teton Pass. For years it was an important transportation corridor linking Idaho and Wyoming and today it gives a host of benefits to residents and visitors of all ages. The Forest Service first graded the “Old Pass Road” (OPR) in 1913, more than one hundred years ago. It was widened in 1928 and used until 1969, when the present highway was constructed. Today the Old Pass Road serves as an extension of Teton County’s Pathways system, giving backcountry access to hikers of all skill levels.  Small groups regularly walk the road.  Runners and bikers regularly enjoy use of the Old Pass Road to access the area’s trail system.  The OPR also gives cyclists one of the most challenging and beautiful hill climbs in the Rocky Mountains, if not the United States.

Repair Work
In 2013 an initial round of repairs were made with funds from private donoations, Silver Star Communications and the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. Asphalt overlay was placed over the worst sections, drainage work was performed to help extend the life of the existing asphalt and potholes were patched. Since 2013 vegetation control and pothole patching has continued. This spring the roadway was plowed and opened to the top by the beginning of May. This year our goal is to place more asphalt overlay over deteriorating sections, continue to work on some drainage problems and patch potholes.

Fundraising Goal
In 2013 we were able to place approximately 3000 lineal feet of asphalt overlay ranging between 12 feet wide and 10 feet wide. Most of the uphill drainage ditch was cleaned and graded and a number of potholes were patched. This year our goal is to do another 2000 lineal feet of asphalt overlay and place several culverts to direct runoff away from the road and prevent debris flows from crossing the road on the upper sections. We also hope to continue to patch potholes and seal cracks. Our goal is to raise $80,000.00 to accomplish the plan and thanks to some generous donors we are over halfway to our goal. The Community Foundation of Jackson Hole has generously awarded the project a matching grant to assist us in reach our goal. Your donation will build on the matching grant to help us achieve our objectives.
